Many collective action efforts, particularly in an online setting, never succeed. While the Internet seems to be an ideal place to promote coordination and change among those interested in participating, it also is easier to derail progress, inhibit direct communication, and have participants lose interest.

This study uses the crowd work platform of Amazon Mechanical Turk and provides a unique platform called Dynamo to help crowd workers collectively organize, post and develop ideas for change, and form campaigns to work together toward a specific goal.

Stalling and friction were two issues that were identified early on when considering limitations and issues that occur in other attempts to promote collective organization and action. Stalling is exacerbated on the Internet because workers see the slowing of action on the parts of others and they, too, lose interest in putting effort toward a particular campaign. The transparency of the nature of the Internet feeds into this. The way friction is exemplified on the Internet is unique due to asynchronous communication and criticisms without construction suggestions.

Workers already have developed supportive ecosystems on forums, email lists, chat groups, and social media platforms to exchange information, help each other with work, warn of dangerous tasks or requesters, and educate new workers. Dynamo is unique in that it is a place for all workers, regardless of affiliation or social network, to join together to work toward goals. Workers are given randomly generated screen names so their identities are obscured. This protects workers from pre-existing social cliques or affiliations.

At the time of the writing of this paper, Dynamo has had 470 unique workers registered. The site has had over 5,800 unique visitors and over 32,000 views. The goal is not to motivate every worker to join. The goal is to attract groups of motivated people to bridge communities and together develop ideas. By continuing to use this platform Mechanical Turk workers can work to develop their own visions for the future of crowd work and bring their concerns to the forefront where they can develop publics and awareness to motivate change.
